Michelle Skagen, Behavioral Health Provider
Michelle Skagen, SW-C, works as a behavioral health provider in an integrative medical clinic in Basalt, CO. She received her Master’s in Social Work from the University of Denver in 2023. Her first career was in Secondary Social Studies Education, but after having children and teaching part-time in unconventional settings, she rediscovered her passion for social work, which was cultivated in her undergraduate studies. She brings a unique set of experiences and perspectives to her work as a therapist. When she left full-time teaching, she taught parent-daughter workshops for Girls Leadership, which led to her role as an instructor for World Leadership School. This opportunity opened her to pressing problems communities face in the US and around the world, which motivated her to pursue Social Work. In her first year at DU, she worked as the Built for Zero Coordinator for the Roaring Fork region, helping local leaders work together to find solutions to homelessness, both in response to Covid-19 and for long-term solutions. While she enjoyed macro-level work, she fell in love with clinical social work during her internship at MidValley Family Practice. She was hired before graduation and continues to grow in her role. She has received formal training in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy and Phase 1 Brainspotting, and uses both modalities in her work with clients, in addition to interventions appropriate for a medical practice, such as Motivational Interviewing, CBT, and Solution-focused therapy.
