Fibromyalgia: Understanding It and Brainspotting with Mary Jane O’Rourke, LCSW, LMT and Serene Calkins, PT
During this RMBI webinar, we will explore the clinical and emotional aspects of fibromyalgia. We will utilize didactic education and the Brainspotting lens to focus on providing support for you and your clinical practice through increased knowledge and skills in working with clients/patients with fibromyalgia.
By the end of this presentation, participants will be able to:
- identify key components of the clinical presentation of fibromyalgia
- demonstrate the ability to apply Brainspotting principles within intervention for clients or patients with Fibromyalgia
- categorize the common root and dual branches of Fibromyalgia
- Describe the “Trapped Cycle” and flair-ups of living with Fibromyalgia
- Explain the importance of including Brainspotting for intervention
- Explain the process of including Brainspotting for intervention using supporting clinical examples
- Compare realistic and (frequently) unrealistic goals and guidelines for physical activities and movement with folks with Fibromyalgia
- Analyze the components and cyclic effects of kinesiophobia
- Describe the components of “Doc Shopping”
- Describe the positive and negative ramifications of “Doc Shopping”
About Mary Jane:
Mary Jane has worked in health care since 1999. Her passion lies in empowering people to acquire the necessary tools to make positive life changes. Mary Jane’s desire to connect with and help others led her to become a Licensed Massage Therapist in 1998 and a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in 2006. Mary Jane has been an intense student of Brainspotting since 2011 and in 2019 became a Certified Brainspotting Consultant. During Mary Jane’s career as a Medical Social Worker, she brought Brainspotting to Kaiser Permanente’s Northwest Hospice and Palliative Care Program as their Bereavement Coordinator in 2014. She currently lives in Portland, Oregon, where she has a private practice. The main goal of Mary Jane’s clinical practice is to establish a therapeutic relationship based on trust, caring, openness and practical support as clients navigate complex life challenges.
About Serene:
Serene Calkins is a Physical Therapist, a Brainspotting Therapist, a Certified Brainspotting Consultant and is the co-creator of the “From Freeze to Thaw” trainings. She is Vice President of Rocky Mountain Brainspotting Institute and, with David Grand, was the co-coordinator of the 2021 International Brainspotting Conference. Serene is also a CranioSacral Therapist and a Pilates Rehabilitation Practitioner. For her full 36-year career in private-practice Physical Therapy, she has focused on treating patients with complex and chronically involved issues such as fibromyalgia, chronic pain, migraines and failed surgeries.
